Hilary Swank Bio Hilary Swank was a known TV actor who crossed over to win an Oscar (not unprecedented, but rare). She was described as a "wispy girly-girl" on network television, but was a believable jungle boy on stage, and karate kid and girl-disguised-as-boy in the movies. Taking on crossover genres and roles is every actor's dream, as evinced by the oft quoted, "I don't want to be typecast." What Hilary Swank brings to this dream is one important consistency- excellence. Swank was born in Washington State, or perhaps Nebraska. Although she's given the latter as her birthplace in interview, she's accused of fabricating it only to get a role. Getting the role is part of acting, so she's forgiven. |

What's true, though, is that she starred, at age 9, as Mowgli in a Bellingham, Washington, local theatre production of The Jungle Book . In 1990, at 16, with school plays and years of local theatre to her credit, she moved with her mother to Los Angeles, and fitted sitcom acting into her schoolwork schedule - Harry and the Hendersons (1991, one episode), Growing Pains (1991, three episodes), Evening Shade (1991, six episodes) and Camp Wilder (1992, 22 episodes). 1992, too, brought Swank's film debut in Buffy the Vampire Slayer . Her next movie, The Next Karate Kid (1994) brought a small measure of audience recognition, but she went on to the more obscure Cries Unheard- The Donna Yaklich Story (1994, TV), Quiet Days in Hollywood (1995), Sometimes They Come Back.Again (1996),Terror In The Family (1996, TV), and Kounterfeit (1996). Television fame came with Beverly Hills 90210 (1997/98, 16 episodes), and Swank was cast, at the same time, in The Way We Are (1997), Dying to Belong (1997, TV), Leaving LA (1997, TV), The Sleepwalker Killing (1997, TV), and Heartwood (1998). In 1999, Swank was chosen for Boys Don't Cry , and the month she spent "living as a boy" (as her own fictional brother, James) before the filming paid off. She netted the Best Actress Oscar, plus Golden Globe, Golden Satellite, MTV, SAG, BAFTA, ShoWest, National Board of Review and a score of critics' association awards - literally everything in the industry. She took her time wading through the predictable mountain of scripts the Oscar win guaranteed, and next filmed The Gift (2001). Off-screen, Swank has been married to actor Chad Lowe since 1997. Her androgynous good looks put her on People's 50 Most Beautiful People list and her sense of style keeps her Best-Dressed in all publications. Swank, too, is an athlete - as a child she was a Junior Olympics and Washington State competitor, her sports being swimming and gymnastics. She lists her experiences growing up in a trailer park and poverty after the move to Los Angeles as two resources for her grittily real performances. She admits to being superstitious (another "actor thing"). She also admitted to being ".very into dresses and high heels for about two months after" her masculine role in Boys Don't Cry . Upcoming are The Affair of the Necklace and Insomnia . Swank has proven, during her relatively short career, that she has the versatility and range to follow up that staggering acclaim for the Boys turn with more of the same (her performance in The Gift has already received rave reviews). She can, it seems, cross over into anything. |
