Full Name - Dido aka Florian Cloud De Bounevialle Armstrong |
Dido Bio Dido Armstrong born on Christmas Day in 1971 in London, England, she was involved in music early in her childhood. At the young age of six, Dido had enrolled into London's Guildhall School Of Music. By age ten, she had become quite proficient at the recorder, violin and piano. From there Dido had spent much of her time performing classical pieces from the renowned composers of our time. It wasn't until she was 16 that she decided to try something different. After she completed her schooling, Dido became involved in her second passion- books. They had always been a huge part of her family's life. Her father worked in publishing and Dido soon found work as a literary agent, while still including herself in many musical side-projects. |

One such side-project was working with Rollo, her brother, in his band known as Faithless. Faithless emerged in 1997 with their debut album Reverence, to which Dido provided backing vocals to a few tracks as well as lead vocals on the song "Flowerstand Man." It was working with her brother that made Dido realize how much she missed making music. So, she decided that was exactly what she was going to do. During her breaks in London from touring with her brother and the band, Dido started making demos for some of her songs. Eventually, these demos caught the attention of music executives at Arista Records and more notably, Clive Davis himself. Dido was invited to Davis' hotel room in London one evening where they discussed Dido's possible future with Arista. Immediately, Dido was impressed with Davis and his approach to her future with the label. As Dido puts it, "The thing that made me really think that this guy was amazing was that I had met a lot of music industry people and this was the only person who actually sat and talked to me about my music as opposed to what they could do." Finally, in June of 1999, Dido's debut album No Angel was released. Immediately comparisons to Sinead O'Connor, Sarah McLachlan and other artists were pouring in, but this is what Dido expected. "I don't mind. I've never compared myself 'cause I just feel like my voice is my voice. But everyone I've been compared to so far, I've really rated. So, I don't mind. You know what I mean? They're great singers. So, I'm just like, okay fine. And people I think feel the need to do that. They need to sort of bracket you somewhere so that's fine." Comparisons shouldn't bother Dido, either. Her album has a distinct sound. No Angel's twelve tracks possess some beautifully lush sounds added to Dido's own hauntingly sweet voice. As albums go, it's difficult to even categorize what type of music this is. Here you can find traces of dance, hip-hop and rock. Maybe this stems from Dido's many many musical influences that range from Ella Fitzgerald and Sinead O'Connor to The Police and The Clash. During the making of No Angel, Dido received lots of input from her brother who co-wrote and produced a few of her songs. "We're enjoying making music together," she says. "I've obviously been influenced by him. He's six years older than me and he's been around all my life." Since the album's release, Dido's been very busy. She has toured with McLachlan's Lilith Fair, promoted her album on many daytime and late night talk shows, has had her song "Here With Me" become the theme song to the TV program, Roswell, contributed to rapper Eminem's latest album and more recently, has opened for Sting, one of her biggest musical influences, in Los Angeles. That's quite a lot in the span of one year. And it seems the album is doing quite well too. No Angel has steadily climbed Billboard's TOP 200 where it has surpassed the TOP 10 mark and "Here With Me" and "Thank You" have been receiving massive radio airplay. Currently, Dido is touring the world. For the first time since the album's release, she's in Europe promoting it, being as how the country hasn't seen the album in its record stores until only recently. Next, she'll no doubt start writing for the follow-up album. Whatever the case, music is something she'll continue creating. "It's a great job. It's hard work, but it's fun." |
